H3: Pressure Ratings

What is meant by Pressure Rating in membrane housings?

The pressure rating indicates the maximum pressure the housing can safely withstand during operation. It is usually specified in PSI (pounds per square inch) or bar and ensures that the housing can handle the pressure exerted by the feedwater without risk of failure or leakage.

What are common pressure ratings for membrane housings?

The pressure ratings for membrane housings are typically categorized into several levels based on the requirements of different membrane elements: 150 psi, 300 psi, 600 psi, 1000 psi, and 1500 psi.

For specific systems,  commercial RO systems range from 150~300 psi (10~20 bar) for small to medium-scale purification. Industrial RO systems typically handle 300~600 psi (20~41 bar), with ratings up to 1000~1500 psi (69~103 bar) for high-pressure applications like seawater desalination. NF and UF systems, requiring less stringent filtration, usually operate at 50~300 psi (3~20 bar).

Temperature

What are typical temperature ranges for SS membrane housings?

Stainless steel membrane housings typically have an operating range that can handle temperatures from -20°C to 100°C (or -4°F to 212°F), depending on the material and design. Some specialized housings can withstand even higher temperatures, particularly when designed for industrial or chemical applications.

For the specific temperature range, please refer to the technical data sheet of different model membrane housings.

What to consider for temperature variations in membrane housing during CIP system operation?

When operating Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems, stainless steel membrane housings are often exposed to elevated temperatures to ensure effective sterilization and cleaning. Typically, hot CIP sanitization involves heating the cleaning solution to 80~85°C (176~185°F) for 30~60 minutes. To prevent damage, verify that the housing can withstand these temperature spikes without compromising the integrity of seals or the structure itself. Additionally, confirm that the housing materials are compatible with the cleaning chemicals used at these elevated temperatures. Since different membrane housing models have varying temperature tolerances due to their design, always consult the technical data sheet for specific temperature limits and guidelines.
